Exterior Wood Door Maintenance

Your new exterior wood doors is handcrafted to last for years and with proper care you can make it last a lifetime. Finish life may vary with the affects of sunlight exposure, the amount of moisture, adequate overhang protection and environmental conditions. If the finish is not maintained it could require a complete re-finishing. Monthly check for cracks in the finish, changes to the color, changes to the texture and cloudiness or chalkiness.

Periodic Maintenance

Once a week wipe clean the entire door. Start with a damp cloth to remove dust from the surface and in corners where panels or glass is fitted. This mainenance is not necessary and won't void your warranty, but will make your exterior wood doors look it's best and thus gives you the opportunity to visually inspect for any signs of wear. (The use of cleaning solutions will depend on what type of finish was used on the wood).

Pre-Finished Doors

The factory pre-finishing we use on our wood doors is second to none.

Stain: acrylic water-based stains for all types of wood has an environmentally friendly, low VOC, allows for a longer open time for application with a quick drying time and outstanding stability with UV Absorbers added in and the formula penetrates wood like oil with vibrant coloring and enhances the woods grain.
Sealer: transparent acrylic waterbased Finish Top Coat is an environmentally friendly, low VOC, with Outstanding Mar Resistance, excellent adhesion with anti-sagging resistance and easy touch up capabilities. Provides a crystal clear appearance and exceptional water resistance with UV Absorbers added.

UN-Finished Doors

Never hang an un-finished exterior door and Never leave an unfinished door open to the elements or sunlight as this can void your warranty. Finish the door with exterior-grade finishing products and according to the manufacturers label. Seal all 6 sides of the door and behind hinges. Use silicon sealer before applying the door sweep with screws.
