One of the most important parts of framing walls is getting the rough opening right. Rough openings for door widths are pretty much standard. The rough opening width is 2 1/2" inches wider than the door itself. This allows room for the door jambs which are usually 3/4" thick. This gives you approximately 1" of play and shim room when installing a prehung door. For a 36" door (3' 0") the rough opening width would be 38 1/2". When measuring for a replacement door keep in mind the existing Brick, Stone or Stucco you have surrounding the entry door as it can spoil an easy installation for proper fitment of the new door.
