Things to know about your new custom hardwood door.
Nick's Building Supply Inc. goes to great lengths to bring
our customers custom hardwood doors factory direct. When purchasing an
unfinished wood door it is very important that the door is finished
properly and in a timely fashion. Remember your door may have spent
several days in transit to you and is no longer in our climate
controlled facility. You should try to finish your door within 72 hours
of receiving it. Wood is a natural product and is only as good as its
protective finish. Choosing the proper finish for your application is
important whether it be interior wood doors or exterior wood doors. Your
doors should always be prefinished prior to installation.
Finishing Instructions

Put masking tape on glass and threshold (if present).
Sand entire door system on all six sides with 220 grit sanding sponge or paper.
Wipe down with rag to remove dust.
Apply first coat of stain using sprayer, brush, or rag method.
After even coat is applied wipe down with rag to achieve the desired stain color of wood door.
Allow drying time.
Repeat process on other side.
Do light sanding to knock down any raised wood from staining process.
Wipe down with rag to remove dust.
Touch up any areas where stain has been sanded off.
Apply first top coat or sealer (depending on product used).
Allow drying time.
Repeat process on other side.
Sand entire wood door with 220 grit until all surfaces are scuffed up (this gives you a good surface for product to adhere to).
Wipe down with rag to remove dust.
Repeat process 3 to 5 times per side on exterior wood doors, interior wood doors require only 1 to 2 coats of finish.
Once you have applied the desired amount of coats of finish, the last one is your final finish coat.
These techniques can be
used with most products on the market, but be sure to
talk to your local stain and finish provider. Remember the
finish will determine the amount of maintenance your door
will require over time. Generally the better the finish
means more time can pass between the maintenance coats. The
life expectancy varies between the different wood finishing
products. |
